The island of Murter

It is the largest island in the Šibenik region and is divided from the mainland by a narrow channel. It was first mentioned by Ptlomai, under the name of Scardon. The Croatian name Srimac (Srimač) appears in 1251 and since 1740 the name Murter has been used. There are numerous sandy, sunny beaches such as Slanica, Kosirina, Podvrška, Vučigrade, Lovišća etc. on the island.

 Tisno

Situated in the narrowest point of the channel, it is partially on the island and on the mainland. A 12-meter bridge connects the two parts. The Croatian word “tisno” stands for “narrow”, which explains the name. The parochial church of the Holy Ghost was built in 1548 but Tisno is more famous for its Our Lady of Caravaggio, a votive church of Italian settlers (the Gelpi family). It is the pilgrimage site of thousands of Dalmatian worshippers on 26 May. There is also a most valuable historical site called Ivinj (near Tisno) with St Martin 's church (XIII ct.), built on the foundations of a former early Christian basilica.

 Jezera

The name Jezera (eng. "lakes")comes from tiny lakes formed in the valleys by rain. A hill named Mortar (a noun compound of Illyrian words for "sea" and "tower"), which gave the whole island its name, rises above the valley. The village consists of three parts. More (eng. "sea"), Selo (eng. "village") and Komšiluk (old word for "neighbourhood"). Our Lady of Health was built in 1720 on the site of an old church. Traditionally fishermen, today the population is increasing their activity in the tourism sector. A local culture and art ensemble named "Kolidišće" has been known for their efforts in preserving customs and traditional folklore.

 Betina

The name is derived from Celtic "bet", meaning "mouth", which corresponds withn the appearance and the position of Betina port. What used to be a clear line between Betina and Murter is these days erased by the recent intense construction work. St Francis' church, built at he beginning of XVII century, dominates the village. Shipbuilding industry started developing in the XVIII century; the famous Betina shipyard was built, still working today, well known for sports and fishing boats manufacture. Traditional folklore manifestation called "Fešta školjki" (roughly translated as "Shells festivities") takes place in the summer.

 Murter

The oldest settlement on the island. Remnants of a Roman colony called Colentum can be seen on the Gradina hill. In medieval times Murter was called Veliko Selo (" Great Village ") and had a population of 203 in 1298. Glagollic letters and the Cyrilic-bosančica were cultivated on the island up to XVIII century. The oldest public library in Dalmatia was founded in 1866 followed by a school and a postal office in 1877. The oldest churches are St. Michael's, Our Lady of Gradina and St. Rocco's chapel on a hill above the village. The inhabitants of Murter own land in the Modrava area near Vransko lake and in the Kornati National Park . The Park's administration is in Murter.
